GROWTH FUNDAMENTALS

The growth vocabulary every founder should know

01

What is growth hacking?

A method that brings marketing, product, and engineering together as one team to run fast experiments and find the levers of growth. Instead of burning a big budget, it builds the growth curve through repeated, data-validated experiments.

The point isn't spending more — it's finding where to push to make growth happen. Decisions come from experiments and metrics, not gut feel.

02

What is a funnel?

It views the customer journey — visit → sign-up → purchase — as a funnel that narrows at each step as people drop off. You have to examine the whole journey, from ad and marketing channels all the way to the product experience.

A clear business model is ultimately the product of these stage metrics — visitors × sign-up rate × purchase rate × average order value. And each metric becomes a lever the team can lift through experiments.

03

What are CAC / LTV?

CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) is what it costs to bring in one customer; LTV (Lifetime Value) is the total profit that customer leaves over their lifetime. Their ratio (LTV/CAC) is the core signal of business profitability.

As a rule of thumb, LTV should be at least 3× CAC to be healthy. Below 1× it's better to stop spending — and watch the payback period too.

04

What is contribution margin?

It's revenue minus variable costs — cost of goods, payment fees, shipping, whatever is spent each time something sells. It's the share that covers fixed costs and 'contributes' to profit on every sale.

Both LTV and CAC payback ultimately come from contribution margin. So your structure has to leave contribution margin, not just revenue — only then does growth become profit.
